A railway police team, led by Somveer Chauhan from RPF Churchgate, scanned the CCTV cameras, found the footage showing a few suspects, and combed the tracks and the neighbouring areas till they zeroed down on Waghela. Confronted with the CCTV footage, Waghela admitted that he was the one who had thrown the rod. The accused has been booked under the Indian Penal Code Section 427 (mischief causing damage) and the Railway Act Section 150 (1) (c) for maliciously wrecking or attempting to wreck a train.

The railway officials said that the motorman reported hearing a ‘clunk’ when the rod hit the train. Anticipating trouble, he stopped the train and an inspection revealed the rod stuck in the battery box of one of the coaches. “The motorman displayed a sharp presence of mind and the RPF team from Churchgate was prompt in tracing the accused,” a senior railway police official said.
